New PACE™ WiFi Messenger provides state-of-the-art communication for hospital staff
12th May 2008
As WiFi communication infrastructures are increasingly introduced into hospitals to speed up the transfer of patient information, Stanley Security Solutions has launched its first WiFi-based messaging system that offers healthcare staff improved communication and safety.
The PACE WiFi Messenger, which is able to integrate into existing WiFi infrastructure of the same standard, is the ideal messaging device for all hospital employees as well as a significant staff protection aid, particularly for lone workers and staff in high risk areas such as Accident & Emergency wards and psychiatric units.
With full two-way speech based on VoIP, built in speaker, microphone and hands-free functions, the PACE can be used as a mobile phone as well as send and receive speech, data and even streamed video messages, all in one compact device. Pre-defined messages can be set up for quick response such as call acknowledgement and the mobile can also be switched to the speaker function to send out group messages, ideal, for example, in voice evacuation situations.
As well as enabling much quicker and more efficient communication between staff across different parts of a hospital complex, the PACE device plays a major role in improved staff protection. It includes a top display with built-in alarm which can be activated with one push of the button and, with an integral location detection function, it can guide anyone responding to an alarm call to their location.
Another important security feature is a MEMS* technology sensor which can detect periods of non-movement as well as acceleration in any direction, indicating, for example, that the device might have been thrown. There is also a facility to use a rip-cord alarm which will activate when the unit is removed from the belt. Manufactured in robust, high impact material, the device can largely withstand this type of mistreatment.
All of these features are designed to reassure staff that wherever they are located in a hospital they can maintain ongoing contact with a central control or other colleagues and can instantly raise an alarm call and have their current location transmitted for immediate response.
Stanley Security Solutions has a proven pedigree in communication and staff protection systems, not least within the healthcare market, and has introduced this latest device specifically in response to WiFi developments within hospitals. Commercial director, Dan Thomas explained: “WiFi technology is a relatively new concept in hospitals but is becoming increasingly used to quickly and efficiently transfer information.
“By developing a device that sits on this WiFi infrastructure and includes a number of distinct security features, we are offering hospital workers state-of-the-art communication and staff protection, all through one compact, mobile unit.”

Hotel staff find it’s good to talk with Stanley
2nd August, 2006
Leading integrated security specialist, Stanley Security Solutions has equipped four hotels in the south of England with new internal staff communication systems as part of its rolling contract to supply the Millennium & Copthorne Hotel Group.
The new hotels all recently completed in Slough, Reading, Mayfair and Gatwick have seen Stanley install its proven DECT cordless telephone system, interfaced, where necessary, with other security features to allow real-time employee communication and enhanced staff security.
The DECT system allows the hotel management to keep in continuous contact with key staff, including housekeeping and maintenance teams, wherever they are in the hotel. It also allows immediate access to essential information and ensures the hotel is more responsive to its customers’ needs.
As with several previous Millennium and Copthorne Hotel sites in the roll-out programme, this solution is also fully integrated to fire panels and fire alarm systems and to panic buttons in health club and swimming pool areas so guests can call for assistance if required.
Lone worker staff protection is also a major issue for large hotels, particularly at night when the staff/guest ratio is greatly reduced, and so the system is also integrated with personal panic alarms, carried for example by room service or maids.
As well as offering these communication systems as standard throughout the hotels, Stanley is also able to add-on bespoke security options, so, for example, at some of the hotels the DECT system can be interfaced with door alarms or with boiler alarms to alert to any maintenance problems.
The hotel group’s Area General Manager (South) Philip Bell, who was responsible for the latest hotels in the south of England commented: “The security communications roll-out with Stanley began several years ago and in some cases we are now on our second and third generation upgrades in several hotels as well as specifying Stanley for all our new hotels. The systems have proved highly efficient and effective and continue to offer increased levels of security feature integration.”

Stanley urges risk assessment and radio-based response to IR alarm scare
20th July, 2006
Hospital managers concerned about the potential failure of infrared (IR) personal attack alarm systems due to interference from high frequency lamps are being urged to consult security specialists in order to avoid putting their staff at risk.
That’s the message from integrated security specialist, Stanley Security Solutions, in response to a Department of Health Estates alert warning that all types of high frequency fluorescent lamps, including energy saving lights, could potentially interfere with IR personal attack alarm systems causing them to fail.
The alert came following problems at two hospitals in Scotland where IR personal attack alarms failed to operate. This appeared to occur after switching on energy saving high frequency fluorescent lamps. Investigations revealed that the IR radiation being emitted from these lamps interfered with the alarm IR receivers and prevented the alarm system from operating in certain areas of the hospital.
Now Stanley has called on all hospitals to review their systems in consultation with the equipment manufacturers, as well as consider alternative, more reliable systems while the problem is being addressed.
Peter Moss, product manager for Stanley Security Solutions’ staff-protection products: “Anything that affects the integrity of a personal attack alarm system and potentially puts hospital staff in danger clearly needs to be thoroughly investigated. We would recommend thorough risk assessment be carried out, checking, for example, the proximity of fluorescent lamps to IR receivers and transmitters as well as the operating frequencies from the equipment’s original manufacturer.”
Another positive measure being recommended by Stanley is the use of proven radio frequency based equipment. Radio-based alarms are not affected by the infra-red radiation from energy-saving bulbs.
Stanley’s own Minder, Bodyguard, Guardian and ADEPT personal attack alarms utilise the very latest radio paging technology to provide complete automatic personnel location and alarm reporting. Its radio-based solution is already installed in some 40 UK hospitals, providing protection for over 5,000 hospital staff every day, as well as in many other lone worker environments throughout the country.
Earlier this year, a Royal College of Nursing (RCN) report highlighted a significant increase in violent attacks on nursing staff, particularly in Accident & Emergency departments where as many as 80% of those surveyed had been physically or verbally assaulted in the past year. With staff the most valuable of resources, providing the right level of protection is clearly paramount.
Peter Moss concludes: “By detailed site-surveys and the use of licensed or interference-tolerant radio frequencies such as DECT1, we are confident that our radio-based systems will continue to offer the highest level of protection even in the presence of high-frequency and energy-saving lights. We would advise any hospital with concerns to contact us to arrange a system review or to consider using radio based systems which continue to provide a very high level of staff security.”

Stanley brings an integrated approach to Residential Care
5th April 2006
Creating a safer and more comfortable environment for the patients in their charge is one of the fundamental duties of any residential care environment. Stanley Security Solutions have now made this easier than ever with a groundbreaking integrated security and communications package.
For the first time, Stanley’s Residential Care Solution integrates patient care systems with security, communications and staff management infrastructures to offer a completely joined up package that can be tailored to meet the needs of each individual institution.
Explains Matt Wheeler, marketing manager of Stanley Security Solutions: “In a residential care home, security systems, patient monitoring and staff communication systems need to work together to provide a safe environment. However, it is essential that the technology provided to help protect patients and assist staff does not become intrusive. That’s why our Residential Care Solutions package is not only interfaced so that all individual solutions run together smoothly, but is also flexible enough that we can tailor it around the bespoke needs of each customer.”
Stanley’s Residential Care Solutions uses the very latest technology to ensure that both patients and their families have complete peace of mind while respecting the need for privacy and comfort. Systems available as part of the integrated package include CCTV monitoring, Gemini™ Nursecall systems, visual visitor verification which provides real time images of visitors on patients’ TV screens, and Wanderguard®, a system designed to protect against patient wandering that utilises a small signalling device worn on the patient’s wrist to trigger an alarm if they are close to an open exit route.
Working in tandem with these patient comfort and wellbeing systems are access control and staff protection solutions designed to ensure the building and staff remain secure. Comments Matt Wheeler: “Both patients and their visitors want to feel that their home is welcoming and accessible, but there are very real security issues to be overcome as care homes are often a target for criminals in search of valuable equipment or drugs. That’s why Stanley’s Residential Care Solutions provides a layered approach to security that can be as simple as keypad access or as sophisticated as integrated access control covering several doors or even multiple sites.”
Stanley’s Residential Care Solutions package also incorporates fire detection and evacuation software, including the groundbreaking Saffire® system which uses vibration and visual alerts to ensure deaf patients are aware of danger in the event of fire.
Stanley has also factored in the communication and scheduling challenges of running a 24/7 operation with a mobile workforce to its integrated offering. A market leader in time and attendance systems, Stanley can tailor specific solution to meet individual requirements. Making the most of the latest communications technology, the company also offers radio paging and digital telephone systems to ensure staff are contactable and updated, wherever they are.
Matt Wheeler continues: “Residential care patients deserve to know that they are being offered the best possible care and, with security, communication and staff management issues taken care of by integrated technology, staff are free to concentrate on their core role of providing that care.”
Stanley Security Systems offers a partnership approach to design, installation and training in integrated Residential Care Solutions and provides flexible financing arrangements to enable institutions to keep pace with technology without the burden of capital outlay.

Stanley highlights the need for improved A&E staff protection
2nd March 2006
As a new report confirms that violent attacks on nursing staff continue to increase, one of the UK’s leading security specialists, Stanley Security Solutions has launched its own campaign to try and improve staff safety in hospitals.
A quarter of the 2,800 nurses surveyed by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) said they had been physically assaulted, whilst the situation was even worse within accident and emergency (A&E) departments with almost 80% of nurses reporting they had been assaulted in the past year. The Department of Health confirmed there has been a 15-fold increase in prosecutions for attacks on NHS staff.
The RCN report comes as Stanley Security Solutions launches a new initiative to increase awareness of its Minder staff protection solutions and it intends to make A&E departments the initial focus of its campaign.
Stanley’s Blick Minder Staff Protection solutions are the ideal choice for all hospital employees, but particularly lone workers, staff in high risk areas such as A&E, or wards such as maternity with full 24 hour operation. The Minder products provide fast, reliable and secure two-way messaging and the system can be easily set up to allow monitoring to begin immediately.
The product range includes Datacall Guardian, ideal for small numbers of lone workers, Datacall Minder which protects staff in isolated areas and Adept Minder which relies on cellular LAN or WAN technology and has voice and text functions for increased security in high risk areas.
Stanley Security Solutions’ campaign to make both NHS and Private Trusts aware of the increased necessity for staff protection programmes will be launched this month.
One of the first sites to benefit from Stanley’s Minder System has been The Royal Victoria Hospital in Blackpool, part of the Fylde and Wyre Hospitals NHS Trust. The physical layout of its new A&E department compounded the threat of violence against staff and, as a result, from the outset a radio-based Minder System was installed.
The Minder System, including 40 mobiles carried by individual staff, allows mobile users to initiate several different types of alarm, providing a quick and easy way of summoning assistance either for medical reasons or in case of an assault. As a direct result of its successful introduction, the adjacent Parkwood Psychiatric Hospital also ordered a Minder System with 100 mobiles.
Commenting on Stanley’s timely campaign, marketing manager Matt Wheeler said: “Whilst our products are already being used in hospitals all over the world, the latest statistics on nursing staff attacks underline the scale of the security problem that remains in many UK hospitals. We’ll be driving forward the message that effective security systems can help protect not just individual hospital staff but also their patients, buildings and equipment.”
